Grottammare is a beautiful town faced on the Adriatic coast, it is characterized by its sandy beaches and its promenade flanked by palm trees. Here, in fact, we are in the heart of the so called palm tree coast.

Grottammare, however, is not only beaches, sea and sun, it has a considerable artistic and cultural heritage, located especially in the ancient village. The old towni is located on the hill, in the highest part of the city, for this reason the tour is called "up and down".

The first stop of our walking tour will be the parish church of S. Pio V.

The facade of the church is inspired by the Romanesque churches and is in exposed brick.

The interior is very large and bright, the plan is Latin cross shaped and at the meeting between the main nave and the transept we find the dome with an eight-pitched umbrella cover.

In the square in front of the church we find the statue of Sixtus V, born in Grottammare on 13 December 1521 and who became Pope in 1585.

After visiting this fine church we will begin to climb the hill overlooking the city and we'll reach Piazza Peretti, dedicated itself to Felice Peretti, who choose the name of Pope Sixtus V.

The most beautiful and important buildings of the old town are faced to this square. You can see Palazzo Priorale, the Altana dell'Orologio, the Teatro dell'Arancio.

Near to this square there is a fantastic panoramic viewpoint. It is a real balcony from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Adriatic coast, the perfect place to take a photo.

We'll continue the tour through the phats of the historic center up to the Church of Santa Lucia, where stood the humble home of the Peretti family and then we will go up again until reaching the place where stood the old castle builded between IX - X sec. A. D.

After our visit, you really deserve a moment of refreshment thanks to a fine tasting of typical local products accompanied by a glass of good wine.
